Archery
- This is the art, practice, or skill of propelling arrows with the use of a bow.
- The archers take turns shooting arrows at a fixed target with ten concentric rings colored 2 each white, black, blue, red and yellow.
Types of Archery
Target archery
- Indoor distances are 18 m and 25 m. Outdoor distances range from 30 m to 90 m. Competition is divided into ends of 3 or 6 arrows.
- Field archery
- Field archery involves shooting at targets of varying distance, often in rough terrain.
- Three common types of rounds are here, hunter, and animal. A round consists of 28 targets in two units of 14 (until the early 60’s two rounds of 28 were shot for 56 targets).
3D archery
- 3D archery is a subset of field archery focusing on shooting at life-size models of game and is popular with hunters.
- It is most common to see unmarked distances in 3D archery, as the goal is to accurately recreate a hunting environment for competition.
Flight archery
In flight archery the aim is to shoot the greatest distance; accuracy or penetrating power are not relevant.
Ski archery
• An event very similar to the sport of biathlon except a reserve bow is used in place of a gun.
Rules and Regulations
- Competitions in Archery can either be held indoors or outdoors.
- The distances from the shooting line to the target are 18 meters and 25 meters for indoor players.
- Outdoor players shoot from distances of 30 meters to 90 meters for senior archers because outside competitions consist of several distances
- Junior archers can shoot from closer distances.
- The distance used in the Olympic Games is 70 meters.
- After the rankings round takes place, 1/32 Elimination will take place, followed by 1/16 Elimination, then 1/8 Elimination.\
- Then the Quarter Finals, Semi Finals then Finals.
Scoring Patterns
The target face is 122cm in diameter and 70 meters in distance with 5 different colors:
• Inner Yellow -10pts, Outer Yellow – 9pts
• Inner Red – 8 pts, Outer Red – 7pts
• Inner Blue – 6pts, Outer Blue – 5 pts
• Inner Black – 4pts, Outer Black – 3pts
• Inner White – 2pts, Outer White – 1pts
• In each Elimination round, Archers shoot 6 sets of 3 arrows each with a minimum of 1 (excluding miss shots) to a maximum of 10 points.
• In the Quarter Finals round, 8 archers shoot 4 sets of 3 arrows.
• In the Semi-Final round, 4 archers shoot 4 sets of 3 arrows
• If a tie exists at the end of 12 arrows in any finals round, one arrow is shot for the win.
Equipments
Arrows
• There are three types of arrows that are commonly used with compound bows
• Aluminum, carbon, and a much less common hybrid type that is a carbon cover over an aluminum core.
• Most archers wear an arm-guard to protect the inside of the bow arm from being hit by the string and prevent clothing from catching the bow string.
• Most modern arrows are two-and-a-half to three feet long (75 cm to 90 cm)
Fletching
• Fletching are found at the back of the arrow and provide a small amount of drag used to stabilize the flight of the arrow.
• They are designed to keep the arrow pointed in the direction of travel by strongly damping down any tendency to pitch or yaw.
Stabilizers
• This is a general term for various types of weights, usually on rods, mounted on the bow to increase stability i.e. lessen movement on release, thereby increasing accuracy.
Types of stabilizer
- Poker Stabilizer
- Limb Stabilizers
- Counterbalance Stabilizers
Bow
• The basic elements of a bow are a pair of curved elastic limbs, traditionally made from wood, connected by a string.
Limbs
• The elastic qualities of the limbs of a bow provide a wide variety of performance characteristics. Longer limbs typically provide longer draw lengths.
