{"id":39304,"date":"2022-05-20T02:12:38","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T02:12:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/?p=39304"},"modified":"2022-05-20T02:12:38","modified_gmt":"2022-05-20T02:12:38","slug":"nikhat-strikes-gold-at-12th-iba-women-s-world-boxing-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/?p=39304","title":{"rendered":"Nikhat strikes gold at 12th IBA Women\u2019s World Boxing Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-39303\" src=\"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Nikhat_Zareen-Gold.jpg\" alt=\"Nikhat Zareen Gold\" style=\"display: block; margin: 8px auto;\" width=\"599\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Nikhat_Zareen-Gold.jpg 599w, https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Nikhat_Zareen-Gold-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Nikhat_Zareen-Gold-150x109.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/>New Delhi<\/strong>: Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen clinched the gold medal at the 12th edition of the IBA Women\u2019s World Boxing Championships after registering a dominating 5-0 victory in Istanbul on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Living up to the expectations, Nikhat thrashed Thailand\u2019s Jitpong Jutamas without breaking the sweat in the 52kg final with judges scoring the bout 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28 in the Indian\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n<p>The Nizamabad (Telangana)-born boxer became the only fifth Indian woman to secure gold medal at the World Boxing Championships after record six-time champion Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006) and Lekha KC (2006).<\/p>\n<p>It was also India\u2019s first gold medal since boxing great Mary Kom won it in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Nikhat got off to a lively start and hit some sharp punches to quickly take the upper hand in the opening three minutes against confident Jutamas, who came into the match defeating the three-time World Championships medallist Kazakhstan\u2019s Zhaina Shekerbekova.<\/p>\n<p>The 25-year-old Indian took full advantage of her long reach and maintained her dominance against the Thai boxer, whom she had beaten in the 2019 Thailand Open semi-final\u2014the only meeting between the two, enroute her silver medal finish.<\/p>\n<p>However, Jutamas tried to fight back in the second round with a counter-attacking display but hardly managed to cause any trouble for the swift-moving Nikhat, who looked in complete control.<\/p>\n<p>Hitting straight and clear punches, strength proved to be a key factor as Nikhat threw caution to the wind in the final round and kept attacking relentlessly before securing the gold quite comfortably.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Winning a medal at the world&#8217;s is always a dream and Nikhat could achieve it so early is extremely commendable. We, at BFI, are proud that our boxers have not only made all of us proud but each of their boxing journeys is inspiring for the upcoming generations,&#8221; Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On behalf of the Boxing Federation of India, I congratulate Nikhat and bronze medal winners Parveen and Manisha as well as the coaches and support staff for this achievement. Our eight boxers qualified for the quarter-finals which was joint most and shows the strength of Indian boxing,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>With Manisha (57kg) and Parveen (63kg) signing off with bronze medals after their semi-finals finish, Indian contingent concluded its campaign with three medals at the world\u2019s biggest boxing event, which witnessed exciting competition in presence of record 310 boxers from 73 countries and also marked the 20th anniversary of the Women\u2019s World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Out of 12 participating Indian boxers, eight made it to the quarter-finals in this year\u2019s tournament\u2014the joint highest alongside Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>With the addition of three medals in Istanbul, India\u2019s overall medal tally has gone up to 39, including 10 gold, eight silver and 21 bronze, in the 12 editions of the prestigious event\u2014third highest after Russia (60) and China (50).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Delhi: Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen clinched the gold medal at the 12th edition of the IBA Women\u2019s World Boxing Championships after registering a dominating 5-0 victory in Istanbul on Thursday.
