Edgbaston (London): Disappointed to be out of the ICC Champions Trophy after losing to England by 40 runs in yet another rain-interrupted match, Australian captain Steven Smith said that there were no excuses for his side’s unsuccessful campaign in the tournament as they failed to capitalize on the decent starts both during the batting and bowling.<\/p>\n

“I thought we let ourselves down a little bit today. We got ourselves in a pretty good position early with the bat, probably 2 for 150, or wherever we were there. We kept losing wickets through the middle, and someone in the top four probably needed to go on and make a hundred. We weren’t able to do that,\u201d said Smith, adding, “We lost 5 for 15 at one point as well, which you can’t afford to do against an opposition like England.”<\/p>\n
“I thought we started reasonably well with the ball. To get three early wickets was quite crucial, and then it seemed like there was a bit of a momentum shift after that rain delay,\u201d said Smith.
Meanwhile, England captain Eoin Morgan said that every team in the world would want Ben Stokes in their side. Stokes made an unbeaten 102 against Australia and added 159 in 26 overs with Morgan to rescue England from 35 for 3.
\u201cThe IPL auction proved that every team would want him,” Morgan said, referring to Stokes’ \u00a31.7m price tag before the 2017 IPL season. “He’s always looking to influence the game: with the bat, ball, or even in the field. Even in the field today at mid-on, he saved a lot of runs. He went through a period today of about five overs where he was unbelievable.
