{"id":32948,"date":"2017-02-03T12:07:41","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T12:07:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/?p=32948"},"modified":"2017-02-03T12:07:41","modified_gmt":"2017-02-03T12:07:41","slug":"kenya-eyes-medal-haul-in-field-events-of-u-18-athletic-worlds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/?p=32948","title":{"rendered":"Kenya eyes medal haul in field events of U-18 athletic Worlds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-32947\" src=\"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Julius_Yego_Beijing_2015.jpg\" alt=\"Julius Yego Beijing 2015\" width=\"520\" height=\"346\" style=\"margin-right: 8px; margin-bottom: 8px; float: left;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Julius_Yego_Beijing_2015.jpg 520w, https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Julius_Yego_Beijing_2015-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Julius_Yego_Beijing_2015-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/>Nairobi: Kenya will send a strong team to the field events during the 2017 World U-18 Athletics Championship to boost the country&#8217;s medal haul, the team manager has said.<\/p>\n<p>Barnabas Korir, who is also the officer in charge of youth development at Athletics Kenya (AK), is leaving nothing to chance to put a sterling performance before home crowds, reports Xinhua.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the last event of the age bracket, and we want to close it in style by giving the best performance and emerging top overall before our own citizens,&#8221; Korir said in Nairobi on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Nairobi will host the last edition of the championships between July 12-17 after the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Council decided to discontinue the youth championships, arguing it was not the best pathway for athletes at that stage of their career.<\/p>\n<p>The IAAF stated it will work with Area Associations to find a more appropriate competition structure for assisting the career development of U-18 age group athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Korir said Kenya has gold medal prospects in the 800 metre, 1500m, 2,000m steeplechase and 3,000m for both boys and girls for a tally of eight gold medals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"olympics\/44137-russia-seeks-return-of-medals-from-athletes-caught-doping\">Russia seeks return of medals from athletes caught doping<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said coaches were training youth athletes in all field events except the pole vault which is lacking equipment and local expertise.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We anticipate topping up the haul with some field events, which Kenya has not been good at,&#8221; Korir remarked.<\/p>\n<p>He said world javelin and Olympic silver medallist, Julius Yego&#8217;s foray in field events has inspired the youth, adding that many are now taking up the event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It took Kipchoge Keino&#8217;s exploits in the 3,000m steeplechase for Kenya to become a powerhouse in the event, and now Yego has defined javelin in the country like never before and many young athletes are following suit,&#8221; Korir said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we visited a camp in Kuresoi in western Kenya, we found young athletes using sticks as javelin.
