One can’t help but look at the contrasting fortunes of the two clubs in Manchester. United on the other hand are labouring in matches, playing as individuals rather than embracing the collective. Jose Mourinho put out a new look side to face Feyenoord with many players getting their first minutes of the season. Feyenoord had made a fantastic start to the season winning their first five matches and were keen to continue their winning run on home soil.<\/p>\n
The match was played at a rather leisurely pace and those watching could be forgiven for thinking that this was a Louis Van Gaal side. United were set up in 4-2-3-1 with the home team favouring a 4-3-3 formation. Clearly Mourinho saw this match to be an ideal opportunity to find out how he could get the best out of his 100 million dollar man Paul Pogba. Pogba was given a free role and kept working hard throughout but lacked any end product.<\/p>\n
The exclusion of Wayne Rooney from the squad seemed a logical way to give him some rest but nothing is ever simple with Mourinho. He wanted to see how his team could set up without Rooney. Feyenoord were largely untroubled defensively and were somehow allowed to get away with far too many fouls without picking up cards. Rashford was left isolated up top with very little support from his wide men Mata and Martial who had poor games by their standards. The lack of desire from most of the United players was baffling as this was their chance to prove that they deserved a look-in for the starting 11 at Watford on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Feyenoord won the ball in the middle of the pitch and launched a counterattack down their right flank with Marcos Rojo, the United fullback caught out of his position. Nicolai Jorgensen, clearly offside in the buildup got into a good position in the inside right channel and did extremely well to pick up the midfield run of Tommy Vilhena drilling the ball into the penalty box.
