\"VikasRio de Janeiro:<\/strong> In yet another dismal day for India, the country’s medal hope Vikas Krishan lost 0-3 to more powerful and compact Bektemir Melikuziev of Uzbekistan in the 75 kg weight catehory, here on the 10th day of Rio Olympics on Monday.<\/p>\n

Krishan, who was one win away from an Olympic medal, was simply no match for the world No.3, a world championships silver-medallist and the reigning Asian champion and surrendered to Melikuziev without much fight. It also ended India’s boxing campaign in the Games without a medal.<\/p>\n

Lalita Babar, too, ended her Rio Olympic journey with a top-10 finish in the 3000m steeplechase final. She failed to repeat her creditable display in the qualification as she clocked 9:22.74 in the finals which was nearly three second outside her national record effort of 9:19.76. However, her effort was still the best performance by an Indian in a track event after after PT Usha’s fourth-place finish in the 400m hurdles in 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth won their respective matches to storm into the quarterfinals and kept the medal hopes alive for India.<\/p>\n

Sindhu beat Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu-ying in straight games 21-13, 21-15in 40 minutes. She will now face world No. 2 and second seeded Wang Yihan of China in the quarterfinal and will have to elevate her game further in order to earn a semi-final berth.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Srikanth defeated world No. 5 Jan Jorgensen of Denmark to reach the quarter-finals. The 11th-ranked Indian got the better of higher ranked Danish 21-19, 21-19 in 42 minutes and will now face China’s Lin Dan, two-time Olympic champion, for a place in semi-finals on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

However, India’s campaign in the wrestling event got off to a disappointing start as Ravinder Khatri crashed out of the Greco-Roman 85kg category after suffering a first round loss. Khatri went down tamely against Viktor Lorincz of Hungary and bowed out of the competition.<\/p>\n

Seema Punia too failed to qualify in the Women’s Discus Throw qualifying round as Punia stood ninth in the Group B Heat with a final score of 57.58. Punia missed her second throw while she scored 56.78 in her final attempt.<\/p>\n
