New Delhi: <\/strong>In a landmark judgment, Delhi High Court has stated that no player can be stopped from playing in WSH. The High Court has stated that WSH is the \u201cfirst of a financially sustaining hockey event in India\u201d and has lauded the efforts of WSH by stating, \u201cBy participating in these events, the hockey players would be able to make a respectful earning which has eluded the hockey players of this country till now. It may attract more youngsters to the game of hockey, who at present are driven to other sports.”<\/p>\n

The high court order states, \u201cIt is clarified that the new regulations would apply in respect of the commitments made after 31st March, 2011. It would mean that new regulations are not applicable for those commitments which are made prior to 31st March, 2011\u201d. It also acknowledges that WSH had rescheduled the event to ensure there is no clash with the Olympic Qualifies training camp and further states \u201cIf the dates are fixed in March, 2012, the apprehension of the FIH can be taken care of as those dates do not come in conflict with any international event.\u201d<\/p>\n

The High Court paves the way for the landmark event by observing \u201cKeeping in view the boost which this series can give to the game of hockey in India, thereby not only subserving a larger public interest, but also benefiting the individual players financially by participating in this series, we are of the view that endeavour should be made to hold this domestic event.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indian Olympian and former Hockey captain Joaquim Carvalo had filed a PIL in the honourable Delhi High Court requesting protection of Indian hockey players who were being unnecessarily persecuted and prevented from participating (and earning a livelihood) in World Series Hockey. The players were being threatened with dire consequences including being barred from representing India in the sport of hockey.<\/p>\n

Arjun Halappa, ace Indian striker said, \u201cThis is the much needed protection the Indian hockey players needed. There is no doubt that WSH is by far the best initiative for strengthening hockey in our country. I am looking forward to captaining the Karnataka Lions\u201d<\/p>\n

Jose Brasa, Former India coach and Olympic Gold Medalist added \u201cThis is indeed a landmark judgment and the Honourable High Court recognizes the role of WSH for the wider good of hockey. Infact a path breaking initiative like this will help focus the global spotlight on this sport\u201d<\/p>\n
