Kuala Lumpur: Nicholas Fung of Malaysia was among the clubhouse leaders in the second round of the weather interrupted PGM Northport Glenmarie Championship on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Fung battled through illness to return with a one-under-par 71 for a six-under-par 138 total which was matched by American Blake Snyder (68), who aced the 149-yard 12th hole, Jordan Irawan (72) of Indonesia and Thai veteran Thammanoon Sriroj (69).<\/p>\n
Airil Rizman of Malaysia was a further shot back in fifth place following a 70 at the RM200,000 (approximately US$55,400) Asian Development Tour (ADT) event staged at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.<\/p>\n
Bad weather forced officials to stop play at 4.58pm with a total of 25 players still on the course. They will return on Friday at 7.30am to resume their rounds.<\/p>\n
Fung continued to shine at the Glenmarie course, the venue where he won the 2012 PGM Northport Glenmarie Championship and finished top-five in the last two editions.<\/p>\n
“I know this course very well so I’m quite confident here. I’ll rest today and hopefully recover for the final two rounds,” said the 25-year-old Fung.<\/p>\n
Despite feeling under the weather, the bespectacled Sabahan, who won the ADT Order of Merit in 2013, carried on bravely and returned with four birdies against three bogeys.<\/p>\n
“It was a good result but I really struggled to finish. I’ve been sick (fever, dehydration and weak) since yesterday before my round. My brother (Kelvin) who is my caddy this week was sick during the practice round so I think I was infected,” said Fung.<\/p>\n
“To be honest, I have to thank my brother. He kept me under an umbrella most of the time and made sure I drank lots of water. I tried my best to play like how I normally do. I didn’t think of making birdies. In fact, I missed a few out there,” he added.<\/p>\n
Among the players who have yet to complete their rounds include highly rated Gavin Green and Sukree Othman of Malaysia and Sean Riordan of New Zealand.<\/p>\n
The winner of the PGM Northport Glenmarie Championship will take home a prize purse of US$9,615 and receive six Official World Golf Ranking points. The top six players and ties will also earn points based on a sliding scale.<\/p>\n
Since it was inaugurated in 2010, the ADT has grown from five events in the first year to 21 tournaments in 2014. A record 24 tournaments have been confirmed for the 2015 season.<\/p>\n
The ADT will continue to reward the top-five finishers on the final Order of Merit with Asian Tour cards for 2016.<\/p>\n
With the Olympic Games looming in 2016 where golf will be reintroduced as a medal sport, players in the region could earn their spots in Rio de Janeiro by earning Official World Golf Ranking points through the Asian Tour and ADT.<\/p>\n
