London: Wimbledon continued to see some more upsets as Laura Robson triumphed in her first round clash against the Russian Maria Kirilenko here on Tuesday. Laura, world number 38, managed to get the better off 10th seed Russian in straight sets by 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 18 minutes.<\/p>\n
Robson, who is just 19-year-old, stunned veteran Kirilenko with her fine serves which were clubbed with some excellent shots down the line. Her win has also ensured a female British presence in the second round at Wimbledon. She is the second British player after Andy Murray, who had made to the second round. She will take on the Mariana Duque Marino of Columbia.\n<\/p>\n
Robson won the Wimbledon girls’ title on the same court in 2008. She also won the London 2012 Olympic mixed doubles silver medal with Murray at the All England Club.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in the other match of the Women\u2019s singles event, Li Na, stormed into the second round as he registered a comfortable win against Michaella Krajicek by 6-1, 6-1.<\/p>\n
The Chinese sixth seed didn\u2019t waste much time and thrashed her opponent in just 67 minutes. She will now face either Olga Govortsova of Belarus or Romania’s Simona Halep in the second round.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Zheng Jie was thrashed by her French opponent Caroline Gracia in a match that lasted for an hour and 20 minutes. Gracia won the match in straight sets with 6-3, 6-4 which saw some resistance from World Number 47, Zheng.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
