{"id":14884,"date":"2013-06-15T03:07:48","date_gmt":"2013-06-15T03:07:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/?p=14884"},"modified":"2013-06-15T03:07:48","modified_gmt":"2013-06-15T03:07:48","slug":"queens-cup-lahiri-jumps-up-to-tied-8th-kataoka-leads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.co.in\/?p=14884","title":{"rendered":"Queen&#8217;s Cup: Lahiri jumps up to tied 8th, Kataoka leads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/golf\/anirban%20lahiri.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" alt=\"Queen's Cup: Lahiri jumps up to tied 8th, Kataoka leads\" style=\"margin-right: 6px; margin-left: 6px; float: left;\" \/>Samui, Thailand: India&#8217;s Anirban Lahiri carded four-under 67 to jump&nbsp;<\/span>up to tied 8th spot in the THB 9.6 million (approximately US$312,000)&nbsp;Queen\u2019s Cup on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Japan\u2019s Daisuke Kataoka is on a revenge hunt after he&nbsp;signed for a second round three-under-par 68 to continue his&nbsp;stranglehold on the lead.<\/p>\n<p>After suffering the disappointment of missing out on a grandstand&nbsp;finish in his last event in Jakarta, the 24-year-old is determined not&nbsp;to lose his grip on the lead again as he heads into the weekend round&nbsp;with a two-day total of nine-under-par 133 at the Santiburi Samui<br \/>Country Club.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s Prayad Marksaeng kept the local hopes alive when he fired&nbsp;the day\u2019s lowest score of 64 to share second place with Bangladesh\u2019s&nbsp;Siddikur.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia\u2019s Nicholas Fung also posted a 64 to take equal fourth place&nbsp;alongside Thailand\u2019s Arnond Vongvanij and Jazz Janewattananond on&nbsp;matching 136s.&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Kataoka never had the experience of leading a tournament until his&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">heroics in Jakarta saw him equal his best result on the Asian Tour&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">with a third place finish last month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Having put himself into another commanding position again, the&nbsp;Japanese is eager to make amends this week.&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u201cI\u2019m looking for revenge! I couldn\u2019t handle the pressure back then but&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I\u2019m feeling a lot better now. I feel that I\u2019m ready and I don\u2019t want&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">to lose out again,\u201d said Kataoka.<br \/>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kataoka dropped his first shot of the week at the par-three 13th but&nbsp;battled back into contention quickly by making three consecutive&nbsp;birdies starting from the 16th hole.&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">After turning in 33, the Japanese added another birdie on the eighth&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">hole to extend his advantage over the chasing pack to two.<br \/>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI played well today except for the 16th where I misjudged my shot.&nbsp;Other than that, my tee shots were perfect and I managed to find the&nbsp;greens on many occasions,\u201d said Kataoka.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Prayad will be looking to claim his long awaited victory at&nbsp;Santiburi Samui Country Club having come close with three top-three<br \/>finishes since the Queen\u2019s Cup made its debut on the Asian Tour in<br \/>2009.<\/p>\n<p>After overcoming a six-shot deficit to briefly take the lead in the<br \/>morning, Prayad is hopeful of a win at the Queen\u2019s Cup, an event which<br \/>he regards as a very important one on the region\u2019s premier Tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Queen\u2019s Cup is a very special event as it means a lot to the Thai<br \/>people. We\u2019re playing for the Queen\u2019s honour and a win by a local will<br \/>mean a lot for the Thai people,\u201d said Prayad.<\/p>\n<p>The 47-year-old started his back-nine 10th by marking his card with<br \/>birdies on holes 11, 14, 16 and 18.<br \/>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Thai continued his dominance with two birdies in three holes after&nbsp;the turn. He signed off well with another birdie on the par-four&nbsp;ninth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not commit too many mistakes today and I was driving the ball&nbsp;really well. Hopefully, it continues to stay this way till Sunday,\u201d&nbsp;said Prayad, whose best result at the Queen\u2019s Cup came in 2011 where&nbsp;he finished second.<\/p>\n<p>Having won the King\u2019s Cup in his rookie year, Arnond knows the Queen\u2019s&nbsp;Cup would be a nice addition in his trophy cabinet.&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">However, he prefers not to put too much pressure on getting that win just yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t really thought about it as it\u2019s still early days. I didn\u2019t&nbsp;really do too well last year, so this year I\u2019m just trying to get&nbsp;around the course and not make any silly mistakes,\u201d said Arnond, who&nbsp;finished in 70th place last year.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old took advantage of the benign weather conditions in the&nbsp;morning by mixing five birdies against one bogey to make his move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI drove the ball a lot better and gave myself lots of chances. The&nbsp;conditions were also easier as there were less wind,\u201d said Arnond.<\/p>\n<p>Fung will have to make last minute changes to his flight itinerary&nbsp;home after he surprised even himself with a 64.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI initially booked an early afternoon flight back to Kuala Lumpur on Sunday but I think I\u2019ve to change to an evening one now. I\u2019ve always&nbsp;tee off in the early groups but today\u2019s score was totally unexpected,\u201d<br \/>said a beaming Fung.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI played really well today.
