The tournament, considered to be a  bastion of nation&#8217;s best and brightest talent, will once again witness  boxers of the country vying for title of National Champion. Over 275  boxers from 36 State and Board teams will battle it out for the  prestigious title in the 58th edition. 40 medals will be at stake in the  contest that is scheduled to be held from the 5th \u2013 10th December\u20192011.<\/p>\n<p> The event is being organised by the Tamil Nadu State Boxing Association  under the aegis of Indian Boxing Federation and is the last national  championship in the IABF calendar for the year 2011. Secretary General  of Indian Boxing Federation, Brig PK Muralidharan Raja believes a good  performance at the championships will do wonders to the boxer\u2019s  confidence and will help them emerge as a front runner in their weight  category. <\/p>\n<p> He said, \u201cNational title is an accolade that every athlete wants to have  in his kitty, therefore like any other year we are bound to witness an  abundance of energy driving the pugilists to national glory\u201d. He further  added, \u201cThe competition is not going to be easy, especially for the  weight categories in which an Olympic qualification is still to be  acquired. Boxer would be gunning for the yellow metal as it would lay a  good foundation for a favourable result in the trails for the Asian  Qualifiers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p> Action got underway at the Alagappa University in the town of Karaikudi,  Tamil Nadu with light fly weight division. 2009 Asian Championship  silver medallist Th. Nanao Singh powered through to the next stage with  an enthralling performance against Sandeep Kumar of Orissa. The national  games gold medallist made a mockery of his opponent as he displayed his  mastery of craft. Kumar doused in the barrage of punches the services  boxer threw at him. In the end Nanao won by a huge margin of 16 points  (23:7).<\/p>\n<p> Common Wealth Games bronze medallist Amandeep Singh also won his first  round bout, but in contrast to Nanao\u2019s bout. In the opening round the  railways boxer had some difficulty getting past the defence of Pushkar P  Bhonsle from Goa (2:0). But the veteran boxer made best use of his  experience gathering pace in the second; he scored six points as opposed  to Bhonsle\u2019s two. The 25 year old managed to win the third round (4:2)  and the bout with a score of 12:4. Upcoming boxer Haryana Devender also  advanced to the next round with an emphatic victory over Pawan Singh  from Delhi.\u00a0 The 19 year old dominated the entire bout with his  aggressive power play. The reigning North India boxing champion beat the  Delhi boxer 18:7.<\/p>\n<p> In the light heavy weight category, Ram Singh of Punjab opened his 2011  National Championship campaign with a brilliant win over Kaptan Singh  playing for West Bengal. Ram, the former A. K.
