Former Indian cricket team coach John Wright said that it should be Sachin who should decide on his future, says a report in The Hindu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSachin is a champion player and has been playing for more than 20 years now. He has been in similar situations many times before too. And, still in a position to play in any format of the game,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNaturally, the issue of retirement crops up when you enter the late 30s in the career. Personally, when in India I know I have to face this question too,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am really optimistic of Sachin scoring a century or even a double century. For, I am sure he should be acutely motivated to have a go at the Englishmen and the Australians later this year,\u201d Wright said.<\/p>\n

On the upcoming India-England series, Wright said, \u201cThe Indians have a reason to play for after the disappointing tour to England last summer. Apparently, they have decided to deny the chance for the English batsmen to have a look at the spinners. And, they should also have had a very good idea on who should be playing.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the struggling Indian opener Virender Sehwag, Wright said, \u201cWell, I have a soft spot for him always. He is an exciting and world-class player and capable of coming good on any given day. Remember his imposing record in the first innings of a match and has the ability to rise to the occasion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, The Times of India<\/strong> reports Wright saying that he was not in favour of having different Indian captains for different formats.<\/p>\n

“Specialisation is a good thing but if the current captain is good enough to play all the formats, then I do not think there is a need for a having different captains,” Wright said.<\/p>\n

“Though such an idea has been implemented successfully before, including in India, I believe having a single captain makes things simpler,” he added.<\/p>\n

“I am a traditionalist, a bit too old fashioned. I like Test matches being played during the day. I think they have done this to attract wider viewership but I do not like the idea. Maybe I am behind times,” said Wright.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
